The work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: Gardening the World

This is a Donation event (£5 suggested)

Monday 10th November 7pm

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was set up to honour and care for the men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, ensuring that they will never be forgotten. Funded by six Member Governments, their work began with building, and now maintaining, cemeteries at 23,000 locations all over the world.

Today, over a century later, the work continues through their staff, supporters and volunteers who preserve the unique cultural, horticultural and architectural heritage and ensures that the stories of those who died are told.

Carol Brown of the CWGC will talk to us about their horticultural work across the globe. She is not charging for her talk, but we will make a donation to the CWGC.

Please reserve a place and make a donation through this Eventbrite link:  CWGC talk.  Then click on Get Tickets. We will also take donations, preferably by card, on the day.

North Wales Arctic Alpine Society: Alan Oatway - Gardening in South Lakeland

Saturday 11th October 1.30pm for 2pm start

We welcome back Alan Oatway who talked on flowers around Everest and Tibet back in 2016.

In his working life, Alan was a teacher and a qualified Mountain Leader. Since retirement, he has been able to devote more time to his enthusiasm for mountains and their plants, photography and gardening.

Now, as a regular gardener at Holehird Gardens, Windermere, Chair of N Lancs AGS, committee member of the Meconopsis Group, and member of SRGC, his activities often combine all three interests.

Alan writes:  "This talk covers lots of flowers, in the context of gardening on rock and in shade in my own garden. I have separated it into sections about raised beds, woodland conditions, wet, rock and "other" - the latter to include all the favourites that didn't fit earlier!"

Draig Beats Festival

Draig Beats Festival in Treborth Botanic Gardens

Contact: whisper@draigbeats.wales

Draig Beats will return on Saturday the 7th of June 2025 to Treborth Botanic Garden!

It is a family friendly, fund-raising event, and continues to build bridges between the University and local communities. There will be plenty of live music, talks, workshops, food & drink, as well as showcasing local initiatives and lots of activities to keep the kids busy!

The festival is run by a dedicated group of volunteers aiming to raise funds to help support our inspiring friend and colleague Dr Sophie Williams, a former lecturer in plant conservation at Bangor University. Unfortunately, she still lives in a care home after contracting Japanese Encephalitis while conducting fieldwork. We are raising money to support her specialist care needs and to enable trips to visit her friends and colleagues.

Please join us for a great day out and help us raise as much money as possible.

Len Beer Memorial Lecture: One Thousand Shades of Green: A Year in Search of Britain's Wild Plants, Mike Dilger

Eric Sutherland Lecture Theatre, Main Arts Building, Bangor University, College Road, Bangor LL57 2DG (arrival from 7.00pm)

Naturalist Mike Dilger had a mission - to see a thousand different wild plants in one calendar year. Having been confined to barracks by the Covid pandemic, and with daily dog walks his sole permitted outdoor pursuit, the simple pleasure of getting to know the flowers at his feet inspired a project that ultimately took him from Cornwall to Kent, and Breckland to the Highlands of Scotland, and included time botanising with Nigel Brown in North Wales.

Palas Print, Caernarfon’s independent bookshop, will be selling Mike Dilger’s book “One Thousand Shades of Green” on the night of the talk, and from the shop or online before the event. To purchase online use this link Palas Print

They will donate £2 for each copy sold to the Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden.

Ticket price: £8 plus booking fee for members of FTBG or AGS (use Contact Usabove to ask for discount code);

£10 for non-members plus booking fee.

This is a Donation Event.

The title of this talk is: “Spot the Difference: Patterns, Peculiarities and Possibilities”

Sean is a Master Craftsman dry stone waller and has written extensively on the subject and lectured world-wide. We have several examples of his wonderful work at Treborth – at the wildlife pond, the new Welsh medicinal garden and the Size of Wales garden.

Sean says the talk is “A look at the variety of dry stonework that can be found across the UK with particular reference to North Welsh examples. From random to coursed, holey and single. Herringbone or vertical, cloddiau, flags and crawiau. Sheepfolds, bridges and barns. Consumption walls, and slate quarries. You name it - if it’s built without mortar, this talk looks at it.”
